BOATING REGULATIONS
The Law - Who needs the Operator Card? - All operators of PWC's (i.e. sea-doo's & jet-skis)
- All operators of boats under 13.1 feet. (with any size engine)
- All operators born after April 1, 1983 (under 24 yrs old)
- All operators require the card by 2009
The operator card is good-for-life. Boaters can obtain their card after receiving a mark of at least 75% on a Canadian Coast Guard accredited test. Boaters have the option of taking this test without first completing a course. An operator card or equivalent issued to a non-resident by their state or country will be considered as proof of competency.
Age & Horsepower Restrictions In addition to the operator competency law, there are regulations regarding horsepower restrictions for operators under 16 years of age that are not directly supervised. - Under 12 years of age:May operate vessels no more than 10 hp
- Between 12 and 16 years of age:May operate vessels no more than 40 hp
- Under 16 years of age:Not allowed to operate a PWC
- 16 years of age and over:No power restrictions

Boat Necessities - A Personal Flotation Device (PFD) or lifejacket (that fits) for each occupant
- Buoyant heaving line (15m or 50' in length)
- Manual propelling device (paddles) and anchor (15m or 50' of chain, rope or cable)
- Bailer or manual water pump
- Watertight flashlight
- Sound signaling equipment (e.g. whistle)
